THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT
My Torah mantles for Temple Beth Israel are intended to bring a burst of color to the Ark which will contrast with the neutral setting of the Bimah. In my designs, I also attempt to suggest, in an abstract way, the feeling of closeness to the earth, sea, and sky that I feel while on Longboat Key.
The overall theme for the Torah mantles, suggested by Rabbi Saperstein,
is from the Shabbat liturgy — “The world is sustained by three things:
by Torah, by worship, by loving deeds.” Each design encompasses
one of those ideas.

1. TORAH: A ribbon form representing a scroll overlaps and intersects a circle, representing the world. The word — TORAH — in Hebrew calligraphy, dances from the scroll onto the circle. Broken shapes refer to the many words of our Torah. | ![]() |

2. WORSHIP: The word “AVODAH” rises from a double sphere representing the Sun and Moun. From the letters emanate uplifting shapes, reaching into the spiritual universe. | ![]() |

3. LOVING DEEDS: The world envelops the entire mantle with a suggestion of Earth, Sea, and Sky. The words “GEMILUT HASADIM” are intertwined into the earthly and heavenly shapes. A mosaic of shapes suggests the infinite loving deeds we do every day of our lives. |
