INSTRUCTIONS FOR CANDLE LIGHTING
GATES OF PRAYER SERVICE
1. Read the English page
2. Light the candles
3. Snuff out the shames candle
4. After choir sings the Hebrew, complete
the English reading with the following:
BLESSED IS ADONAI OUR GOD, RULER OF
THE UNIVERSE,
WHO HALLOWS US WITH GODLY MITZVOT,
AND COMMANDS US TO KINDLE THE LIGHTS
OF SHABBAT.

THE DUTIES OF A GABBAI
The rabbi calls the Gabbaim up to the bimah
at the beginning of the Torah service. They will join the Torah procession
and will follow the rabbi down the center aisle.
They will then turn around and go back
to the bimah while the rabbi continues around the rest of the aisles.
After they come back to the bimah, the
Gabbaim will help the rabbi undress the Torah and place it on the Torah
lectern.
The Gabbaim stand on the left
and right sides of the lecturn.
They make the blessing card available for
the aliyot to see.
They help and direct the aliyot and tell
them where to stand.

ARK OPENERS
Friday night
The ark openers will be seated
on the bimah.
Following the procession. They will be
orally invited by the
Rabbi to open the ark. They stand facing
the ark with their prayerbooks until directed to close ark by the rabbi.
They then sit on the bimah for the remainder
of the service.

ARK OPENERS
Saturday morning
The ark openers will be called
to the bimah by the rabbi to open the ark for the sanctification.
They will open the ark and stand facing
the ark, then close the ark at the rabbi’s direction. They will then sit
on the bimah for the remainder of the service.
They will be signaled by the rabbi to open
the ark at the beginning of the Torah service. The Torah will be taken
out of the ark by the rabbi. The ark openers will then close the ark and
follow the rabbi in the procession.
After the Haftarah is read, the ark will
be opened and the Torah returned to the ark. The ark openers remain facing
the open ark until the conclusion of the Adoration.
After the Adoration, the ark openers will
close the ark and return to their seats on the bimah. They will remain
on the bimah until the end of the service.

DUTIES OF THE HAGBAH AND GALILAH
After the last aliyah, the Hagbah and Galilah
come up on the bimah when called by the rabbi
The Hagbah raises the Torah, then turns
around and then sits down as directed.
The Galilah dresses the Torah with the
help of the gabbai.
The Hagbah and the Galilah leave the bimah
and go down to their regular seats with the congregation. |
DUTIES OF AN ALIYAH
The rabbi will call an aliyah up to the
bimah
The rabbi will then point with his yad
(pointer) the Torah portion that he is going to read:
The aliyah will then take his/her talit
or prayerbook~ touch that Torah passage with it and then kiss the talit
or prayerbook.
He/she will then recite the blessing in
hebrew before the reading. (the blessing will be provided on the bimah
in Hebrew and in English transliteration).
After the rabbi recites the passage, the
aliyah will then kiss the Torah as above, then recite the concluding blessing.
The aliyah will then follow the instruction
of the gabbai as to where to stand. |
